May Park... A Nurturing Tradition!

Fondly referred to as Sierra Leones Sports Academy, Saint Edwards Secondary School has forever been the nurturing home of some of Sierra Leone’s most outstanding athletes in all sporting disciplines.  Many of whom end up representing school, club, and nation.  May Park is indeed the home of Sierra Leones best. With pride we present and celebrate her history.

Mohamed Kallon Scoring for AC Milan FC

Mohamed Kallon MOR (born 6 October 1979) is a Sierra Leonean football manager and former player who played as a striker. He is widely considered the most famous footballer from Sierra Leone. He made 39 appearances for the Sierra Leone national team during his career.

Kallon is the younger brother of former Sierra Leonean international footballers Kemokai Kallon and Musa Kallon.

Mohamed Kallon attended primary school in Kenema and completed his secondary education at St. Edwards Secondary School in Freetown.

During his early international career for Sierra Leone, Kallon was given the nickname Small Kallon by Sierra Leonean football fans because he was the youngest of the three Kallon brothers in the Sierra Leone national team

Upon completion of his Secondary school education at St. Edwards Secondary School in Freetown in 1994, Kallon signed with the local club, Old Edwardians of the Sierra Leone National Premier League at the ge of 15. During the 1994–95 season, he struck fifteen goals in 24 league games for Old Edwardians and became the youngest player to ever play and score in Sierra Leone National Premier League.

After the 1994–95 season, Kallon left Old Edwardians and signed for Lebanese club Tadamon Sour. He spent one season with Spånga IS in Stockholm, Sweden. He was then signed by Inter Milan. He was then loaned to Swiss Super League club AC Lugano, Serie A club Bologna F.C. 1909 and Cagliari, and Serie B clubs Genoa He also farmed to Reggina and Vicenza in a co-ownership deal for an undisclosed fee and 9,000 billion lire respectively (€4,648,112). He played with Cristiano Zanetti at Cagliari, whom he later worked with again at Inter Milan.

After the abolition of the non-EU quota for each team halfway through the 2000–01 season,Kallon returned to Italian club Inter Milan before the start of the 2001–02 season., for a reported 8,500 billion lire transfer fee (€4,389,884). With Christian VieriRonaldoÁlvaro RecobaAdrianoHakan Åžükür and Nicola Ventola also in the side, Kallon was originally a third or fourth choice striker. But injuries to Ronaldo and Recoba meant that Kallon played 29 Serie A matches, scoring 9 goals and becoming the team's second highest scorer of the 2001–02 Serie A season, behind Vieri, as the club narrowly missed out on the league title, finishing in third place, also reaching the semi-finals of the UEFA Cup.

Felix Sandy 2nd Place in his Quater-Finals

Arguably St Edwards finest and Sierra Leone's all-time greatest track runner, Felix Sandy of Mulcahy House is a multiple-time all-American college athlete.   He is a two-time Olympian, and Sierra Leone’s 400M national record-holder 35 years and counting.

In the summer of 1989, Felix represented Sierra Leonean 400 meters at the World University Games where he was one of eight athletes to make it to the finals. However, he sustained a hamstring injury during the finals and could not complete the race.  What a bummer as this was as this was the very first time a Sierra Leonean made it to the top eight in any world class competition and with a real chance of making the medal stage.

In the same year, Felix represented Sierra Leone in the 400meters at the All-African Championships and finished fifth in the Continent.  This fifth-place finish at the African Championships earned Felix an invite as a guest athlete in the 400 meters race at the 1989 British Amateur Athletic Association (AAA's) championships.  He made it to the finals and came in third place.  If Felix were a Brit at the time, he would have qualified to represent Great Britain at any world competition for that year. The highest point of his track and field career was being recognized and ranked in the Top Fifteen Athletes and among the Top Three Foreign Collegiate Runners in the entire United States per event by the premier sports magazine, Track & Field News in their April 1988 issue.

Today Felix resides in the U.S where he and his wife Valerie have raised all university educated children, two of whom have emulated him as Division One Student athletes: SahrFelix, a soccer player; and, Sierra, a tennis player.

Felix is a deep appreciator of the great Edwardian track and Field giants that came before him. He was blessed with mentorship from the legendary Sebleh Smith, Andy Wright and many more.  The Edwardian peer rub off is far reaching with benefits that have no boundaries. When asked who are some other Edwardians that had the most impact on his athletic life, Felix smiled and said Sentu Johnson and Bokarie Kamara, his former games master.
